What's Up Wednesday + Ornery Poetry Sunday: At Sea: A Silly Senryu and Verbose Post

Sea is all I see
I am at sea as you see
See sea woe is me

~cie~

If all you wanted was the poem, congrats, you're done. Now, wasn't that quick and mostly painless?

If, on the other hand, you enjoy being tortured informed, read the Numerous Notes below!

notes
You know me. Or you may be one of the lucky ones.

I'm at it again, doing too much.

For October, I will be doing OctPoWriMo as I have during the past I don't remember how many years, but it's quite a few.

I am combining the OctPoWriMo prompts with the Haiku prompts from Carpe Diem Haiku where possible.

I will also be sharing one of my fantabulous poems every Sunday at Something for the Weekend Sir.

I'm sharing this poem this time even though it's not a very good poem, because I like wordplay.

I would also like to write the second novella in the Tales from the Dreamlands series, tentatively entitled "The Key of Eidolon," using the Spooky October Writing Prompts from the Writers Handbook blog, as I did in creating Ketil and Yitzy's Adventure in the Xura Dream House last year.

Here is the link to the Writers Handbook Blog.

If you would like to pick up a copy of Ketil and Yitzy's Adventure in the Xura Dream House, here are the links.

Buy the Kindle version of Ketil and Yitzy's Adventure in the Xura Dream House for $3.99  https://amzn.to/2ZHmryK

Buy the PDF version from LBRY for 75 LBC (approximately $2.25)

LBRY is a decentralized content marketplace. I price the PDF versions of my work at approximately half of the Kindle price because I receive the entire amount rather than a royalty percentage.

You can get a free LBRY account through this link. You can earn LBC for viewing content on LBRY as well as from selling your content.

I will probably do a Halloween promo with this book and make it free from Kindle for 5 days as well as making it free on LBRY with a wheedling plea gentle suggestion to Tiphowyalike, in other words, leave me some LBC because I'm a broke-ass hack you love me.

Oh jeesh. I forgot what I was doing in mid-thought. That never happened before.

Nah, it totally happens all the time. In my case, it's a sign of ADHD rather than a sign of dementia. Lucky, I guess.

I am also going to continue using the Reedsy prompts to write The Ballad of Gerry Clifford. I had originally intended to publish this book over the summer, but then it exploded and there were story parts everywhere. I am completely reworking it and am hoping to have it published in early 2021. Or mid-2021. Or something. Whenever. Hopefully, I don't up and croak before that or anything.

I...um...yeah. I'm hungry.

I will also be doing a piece for the WEP prompt for October.

http://writeeditpublishnow.blogspot.com

I have a metric butt-ton of book promos that you can read for yourself on my remodeled and most excellent book review blog, Readers Roost.

I will continue with the MFRW Book Hooks and Weekend Writing Warriors posts at the official Naughty Netherworld Press blog, along with other fine features such as WIP Wednesday and the Monday Peeve.

I don't know if it's worth it to continue with the BitPatron, Ko-Fi, and Patreon subscription platforms. It's more time spent, and they have never attracted an audience. Nothing's more pathetic than a Patreon with no patrons.

I will definitely be continuing my Naughty Netherworld Press and Poetry of the Netherworld channels on LBRY.

And now, the part that you've been waiting for!

Fetch: Old Friends (Naughty Netherworld's WIP Wednesday)

Image copyright Cottonbro

This is the first section of the newest segment in my WIP series, Fetch. I was going to put it into the first book, The Ballad of Gerry Clifford, but then decided it would fit better into Gerry's son Daniel's story, and I don't know what number in the series that one will be.

The entire segment is 3000 words. I used multiple prompts, a list of which can be found following the segment.

The entire segment can be purchased from LBRY for 15 LBC (approximately 45 cents). Next week, you may be able to read the story free on my Reedsy profile. This will depend on whether or not they accept the story, but they usually do.

I

The late morning was clear and crisp as Sawyer Roth stepped out of the travel hostel. Suddenly, an overpowering smell of roses assailed his nostrils, followed by a taste like sour milk. He clasped his hands over his mouth. After all, it wouldn’t do for a civilized man to vomit on the street in the sight of the good folk out for a cool lunchtime stroll.

Sawyer hurried to the lavatory. After many miserable moments of seemingly endless sickness spewing from deep within him, he collapsed against the toilet, trying to bring the dry heaves under control. A halo began to form around his vision, and Sawyer knew that a skull-splitting headache would follow as it had every time since the first moment that he had breathed in the cloying scent of roses at five years old.

Sawyer explained to the sweet hostel-keeper that he was experiencing a migraine headache and wondered if she could provide him with a private room where he could pull the curtains and ride it out. He promised that he would pay extra, but the grandmotherly Desideria Ferrari wouldn’t hear of it. She rang for her assistant to take over at the desk, then hustled Sawyer into the rickety elevator and took him to a cozy little flat on the fourth floor.

“I have this room ready for my grandchildren when they come visit,” Signora Ferrari explained. “You call if anything you need, Signore. Tea, food, I fix for you. Ay, povoretto! The migraine headaches are un fardello terribile. I pray you rest well and dream them away. Nel nome del padre e del figlio e dello spirito santo. Amen.”

“Grazie Signora,” Sawyer responded, grimacing. “Perhaps you could bring me a glass of water so I can take my medicine and I would appreciate if you might fix me a pot of weak tea and leave it for me to drink throughout the day. Molte grazie per la vostra gentilezza.”

Desideria brought Sawyer some water and he swallowed his tablets.

“Rubbish setback this is,” he sighed. “I’ve not been back to jolly old Crouch End since I left at eighteen. Hopefully, this is the nadir of this trip. I wished to be off to the London museum to see that glorious new Renaissance art display. Well, I’ve had to inure these rotten headaches putting a dent in me best-laid plans from the time I was a knee-high nipper so it’s not as if it’s taken me by surprise.”

“Eh, the art has been around since the Renaissance, no? It will be there tomorrow or the next day. You rest now, dolce figlio di Dio.”

The touch of the kindly old woman’s fingers on his temples soothed Sawyer, and he drifted off to sleep. She pulled the door closed quietly and made the sign of the cross before leaving.

Notes

The books in the Fetch series are either novels, collections of interrelated stories, or both. They are filled with romance, peril, and misfits and are penned by an unromantic misfit in constant peril from her myriad of chronic health conditions. You can't find them in stores, because they haven't been released yet.

You can, however, find other Naughty Netherworld Press offerings here.

Frozen Crimes Blog Hop

Frozen Crimes Blog Hop Prompt: Whom would you want to be stuck with during a blizzard, and what would you do?

My Answer:

Go ahead, roll your eyes. But I would like to be stuck with Stephen King, and we would write. His wife could be there too. I promise I wouldn't Annie Wilkes him. Although I may bear a physical resemblance to Kathy Bates, I am mostly harmless.

Kathy Bates could be there too. She seems like a cool person.

EXCERPT:

The crunch of the shovel pounding into the snow and ice filled his ears. It was all he could hear. The rest of the street was silent beneath its wintry blanket. Breathing was difficult with the icy air clogging his lungs. His nose burned. His throat was dry and on fire. But he ignored it, focusing on his task.

Crack, crack, crack.

He jabbed the shovel into a hunk of snow. On the third hit, it shattered into several pieces. He scooped them up and flung them to the side. He surveyed what remained. There was one big ball in the middle of the path that needed to be dealt with next. He moved over to it and struck it. That one impact had it severing in two. He was about to hit it again when something crashed into the back of his head.

Explosions of white light danced over his vision. Pain enveloped his skull.

The shovel slipped from his fingers. Blackness cloaked his mind, coaxing him into its depths.

Beth. Her name was a whisper in his head, as if his thoughts were being sucked into a wormhole.

His legs collapsed under his weight.

Cold. It seeped into him, consuming him. And then his consciousness fled down that same void that ate his thoughts.

Late Night With Gandy Stafford: MFRW Book Hooks 30 September 2020

http://mfrwbookhooks.blogspot.com

The Blurb

Geeky Gandy Stafford's lifelong fantasy comes true when he meets the otherworldly Dorma and Desyra. These last remnants of a botched extraterrestrial invasion discover that they require a great deal of energy to maintain their human forms.

The easiest way to obtain essential power?

Sex, and lots of it.

The Snippet

(Last week, Gandy drove the aliens home in his luxurious 1975 Ford Pinto.)

“Yeah, that would make it inconvenient. I wouldn’t mind much if Earth got taken over. Most people here are kind of crappy. Well, here we are. I don’t have much, I need to go shopping tomorrow, but you’re welcome to whatever you can find in the cabinets or the refrigerator. Um...like, I don’t even know what you eat, so, hopefully I have something that you can eat.”

“We absorb energy,” said Dorma.

“Oh, okay. So, you, like, plug your finger into a light socket or something?”

The alien looked at Gandy, puzzled.

“We absorb life energy,” she said.

“Oh. Hey! I thought you said you weren’t going to eat me!”

Well, that would be thoroughly awful! Having an accident victim brought in and set on your bed on a bloody blanket is pretty much the epitome of a bad day.

I worked in the medical field for a number of years. Blood loss, head trauma, electrolyte imbalance, and of course good old altered mental status from substances or a psychiatric condition are all reasons why a patient might not be grateful for help rendered.

Of Hotheads and Rotted Potatoes: Weekend Writing Warriors 27 September 2020

The Blurb
The fate of the Cosmos rests in the hands of an unlikely team of unusual friends. Will an exiled member of an ancient extraterrestrial race, a human ghost, and two ghouls be able to outfox an ancient evil and beat Nyarlathotep at his game before time runs out? This buddy story is the first in a series of New Cthulhu Mythos cliffhangers.

The Notes
You can read the previous snippet here.

The Snippet

“In you go, you lot,” Robin cackled. “I dare you!”

“There is no need for dares, you rotted potato!” Ketil grumbled. “We was, in any case, going to enter this place not well to enter even before you came along.”

“There is no need to refer to me as a rotted potato, you hothead!” Robin shot back. “Take meself to Sweden and gnaw on your tough old jerky of a carcass, I ought. Just for spite, I might.”

“It matters nothing to me as I am not using it,” Ketil returned.

Having finished his tasks for the night, Gandy invited the aliens to ride with him in his 1975 Ford Pinto.

“This car is kind of a zero,” he apologized. “I don’t know how it even keeps running.”

“It is transportation,” Desyra said matter-of-factly.

“Yeah, that’s true. Transportation it is. Hopefully, it will transport us to my place without a problem. Okay, so I live in a little townhouse by myself, but my pops owns it, and we’ll have to be quiet. My neighbors are kind of busybodies, and they’d be more than happy to tell my old man that I brought home a couple of girls. He probably wouldn’t believe anything happened, so I guess it really doesn’t matter, though. Say, your people are pretty advanced, right? Why don’t you just take over the planet?”

“That was our fleet’s orders. But there are only two of us now.”

About Me Monday Peeve: Don't Try To Be All Things to Everyone

My son has a cold. It's such fun living in an era when a common cold strikes terror into the heart. He was filling in a hole yesterday and got very sweaty. Then it clouded up and started flashing lightning and cooled down a fair bit, so he ended up with a chill.

I have to take the car to the body shop for repairs and will need to have a rental for a few days. This old dude rear-ended me while I was making a left turn. Fortunately, it wasn't a high enough impact to deploy the airbags. If it isn't one thing it's ten others.

The place where I get most of my income these days is doing book reviews, which isn't as much fun as it sounds like it would be. It's actually very stressful. I am also working on my own writing. You know, those grand literary efforts that I share in this hallowed space.

I keep learning the hard way that I shouldn't try to be all things to everyone. I took on two unpaid book reviews for people outside the Online Book Club. (This doesn't count the review that I did as an in-kind favor for a fellow author in return for a guest spot on their blog.)

Gratis guest posts are one thing because the author is responsible for creating the post themselves. I just plug in the HTML on my book review blog. It's an easy way for me to help aspiring authors. Reviews, on the other hand, take up a huge amount of time, and that impacts my income because I'm doing volunteer reviews instead of paid reviews. It also impacts my ability to work on my own material because my brain is toast.

I reworked my literary services page (https://ornerybookemporium.blogspot.com/p/ornery-literary-services.html) to reflect the fact that I will now only do book reviews for either a $25 fee or an in-kind trade. I have zero advertising budget, so if someone gives me a guest spot on their blog to spread the word about my work, that is a huge help.

Part of the problem lies in the fact that I would love to review each and every book that I have an opportunity to promote. They all sound so fascinating. If I were independently wealthy, I would stop doing the paid reviews for Online Book Club and only do volunteer reviews. However, the one bad brain that I have doesn't possess the ability to review two books in a day plus write my own content.

I have to complete a book review approximately every other day to make at least $500 per month. Unfortunately, I am not able to make a living as an author at this point.

No more volunteering time I don't have. I've always been bad about doing this.

If I don't take care of me, how the hell am I gonna take care of anybody else?

And no, I am not a "bad person" for needing to look out for Number One.

I'm a slow learner.

Cie

Fellow broke folk, please consider using Silver Dagger Tours to promote your book. I am not being compensated for telling you this. I just started doing guest spots for them and am going to use them to promote my own books. I just wanted to tell you about them because they are the bomb. Check them out!

I've loved this song for decades. It reminds me that I need to take care of myself, which is something I've never been good about.

Weekend Writing Warriors 20 September 2020

The Notes
Last time, Robin annoyed Ketil with his speculations regarding Yitzy.

The Snippet
“Apologies for me partner,” the large ghoul interjected, again doffing his newsboy cap. “We are new to the Land of Xura, but we have heard of you and the House of Lost Dreams, Ketil Nagel. I am John Tamboli the Tambourine Man, otherwise known as Little John, and this is my bosom companion Robin Roberts, or Robin Hood, as he prefers.”

“Yes, well, I am sure he has robbed many hoods,” Ketil quipped. “It is nice to make your acquaintance at any rate, Little John. I am not yet convinced of the pleasure of making Big Robin’s acquaintance, but my friend Yitzy has instilled in me the belief that one should avoid making hasty judgments, and possibly hasty puddings, if one is not well versed in cooking such. All humor aside, however, I am not sure it would be well for a ghoul to enter this house. It is my experience that ghouls not born ghoul become ghouls because of traumatic circumstances, and this house has a tendency to try and make one relive their traumas. Regardless of what you may have heard, there is no gold, glory, nor benevolent magic to be found in this malign structure.”

“But adventure there is, yes?” Robin inquired, holding the door open for his companions.

Sharing a link to the post is acceptable.

Quoting portions of the post for educational or review purposes is acceptable if proper credit is given.
