WIP Wednesday: In the Beginning: Papa's Little Sprout

“People see what makes sense to them, reality notwithstanding.”

A swarthy, handsome man with sleek, dark hair framing his angular face and flowing down beyond his shoulders sat down on the ground beside his daughter, a lovely child clad in an eye-catching patchwork dress emblazoned with embroidered flowers. The child waved her hand, and a sprout pushed its way up from the grass, growing and blooming into a lovely white daisy. The youngster’s magical abilities alone would have been impressive. They were infinitely more so considering that the child and her father were on the dwarf planet that would come to be known as Pluto in an infant planetary system coalescing around its juvenile star.

The girl had a miserable look on her face as she tried to hide behind her plentiful waves of coal-black hair. She turned to her father and threw her arms around his neck, clinging to him.

“Papa, I know this,” the child replied in a quavering voice that went straight to her father’s heart. “I didn’t intend to be contrary. It’s just that I’ve thought about it and thought about it, and I simply can’t make myself understand, no matter how hard I try.”

“Yadira, my special little sprout, you’re not contrary at all,” the Cosmic Trickster replied tenderly. “Can I tell you a secret?”

“Anything, Papa,” the child declared, drying away her tears and sitting cross-legged facing her father, a conspiratorial look on her face.

“Well, as you know, this Universe we find ourselves in now was born of the tragedy that befell your homeworld, Zaïs, on the day that you were born.”

“Of course, Father. I know that you had to race through time and space and countless wormholes and dimensions to keep me safe from the evil responsible for the destruction of Zaïs. I also know that you were not native to Zaïs but that you arrived there in the time between winter and spring. You brought hope back to my mother’s soul. She had waited a long time to find you.”

“Yes, my pet, and for me, it seemed that every journey from the past led me along the path to my Nathicana. She was like water to my thirsting soul. Alas, the path back to her does not lie on a straight line, but arduous though it may be, we will one day find our way to her again. My point in telling you this is that some things are not readily apparent, even to an immortal. Even I, the mighty Nyarlathotep…”

The God scooped up a handful of dust, tossing it into the air. The particles sparkled, grew, exploded, and raced into space to become companions for Pluto. Yadira laughed and clapped her hands at her father’s exaggerated performance and manic grin. Nyarlathotep’s expression softened as he took his daughter’s hands.

*************

This is the first segment of a new chapter in my WIP, In the Time Before.

Yadira Root is the creation and intellectual property of Team Netherworld Creations/Naughty Netherworld Press. Those of you who have been coming to this juke joint for a while may know the older, snarkier version of Yadira. This tentative new novelette, novella, or novel introduces the young Yadira and illustrates the close bond that she has with her father, the Outer God Nyarlathotep.

Nathicana, the Gardens of Zaïs, Dzannin, and the white nephalotë are the creations of H.P. Lovecraft, initially appearing in his 1927 poem Nathicana.

The bolding of certain words is simply to indicate where words from the Sunday Whirl Wordle were used. The remainder of these words were used in the second segment of this chapter.

The full chapter is available for purchase from Odysee for 15 LBC (approximately $0.45).

Happy Sunday and all that. I've mostly been concentrating on poetry this week. We're about to start the first big poetry challenge of the year, and I'm still formatting my fall collection from last year. My dreams are filled with stress, and last night that stress took the form of Kanye West. He didn't do anything except hang around being Kanye West, but his uninvited presence told me that he was a manifestation of stress.

Anyway, for those who are interested, visit me at:

poetryofthenetherworld.blogspot.com

http://bit.ly/POTNOdysee

or

http://fishypoets.blogspot.com

The third link is my friend Russell's blog. I publish a poem there most Sundays. Russell has other poetry-related features that some of you may be interested in.

I'm planning to edit my newest Tales from the Dreamlands novel, "The Wizard's Key"  for this year's Camp NaNoWriMo. I may try to fit the A to Z challenge in, but it kind of feels like a bit much. I have a lot of material for The Yadira Chronicles series but am not sure just where to start with it. I have to slap out April's Cloned Heat number. Did I mention the overdue poetry compilation?

I need more subscribers for this thing. Everyone says "you gotta have a newsletter." But if nobody even reads my newsletter, isn't it kind of a waste of time to have a newsletter?

I feel like I'm chasing myself around in circles while Kanye West watches judgmentally from the sidelines.

Thirsty Thursday: Mystic Gallery

Mystic Gallery

“Let us have a little fun with this place, Yadira,” Nyarlathotep suggested to his daughter, spinning in a rapid pirouette, and trading his sharp royal blue ensemble for a zoot suit composed of wild patches of colors and patterns seamlessly woven together. “The good Princess Ondina wished for this gallery to be a place where visitors could leave their cares behind. As you have observed, each of these paintings is the gateway to a wonderful world, but none of these worlds is our world. Let us create a gateway to our very own world. How do you think that it should look?”

Yadira sprang to her feet in a surprisingly spry manner for an impossibly ancient crone. She giggled with glee as she waved her hands, creating a vast canvas on the wall before her.

“I can’t decide on the frame, Father,” she reported. “What are your thoughts? Should it have an elegant or a rustic appearance? Should it appear old or new, green or blue, metal or wood, what would be good?”

“Since this is to be our combined world, I think that I should choose one attribute and you the next until we are satisfied with our efforts. I think the frame should be ornately carved wood if you agree.”

“Rustic and ornate at once, I concur. I believe that a muted gold would be the correct shade.”

“Absolutely! We do not wish for the gold in the frame to outshine the gold of the sun or suns in our world’s skies. I feel this should be a green and pleasant world. The Zoogs like green and I intend to invite a few of them to serve as guards.”

“An excellent choice, Father. There should be a lovely house near the center of the painting, the sort of place where one could invite guests for tea.”

“Splendid! Now, I believe there must be a fence with a gate surrounding the house. Nothing terribly intimidating, mind, but one should not look at our house and think that they could simply walk right in and help themselves to whatever they desire. One must go through the gate to get to the door, and before one can approach the door, they must check in with the Zoogs at the gate. I think that a nice hellhound or two would be a fine addition to the property, but I grant that they might frighten away guests.”

“The hellhounds should remain subtly in the background,” Yadira agreed. “What season should it be, Father? I was thinking spring or summer because I believe that our painting should have plenty of flowers.”

“A lovely spring scene, most definitely,” Nyarlathotep concurred, and though he smiled broadly, his eyes sparkled with tears. “Spring or early summer, yes. As you know, my love, I first met your mother at the time between winter and spring in the gardens of Zaïs. A more beautiful scene I have never seen—ah, but you have heard this story many times before.”

Sweatin' Bullets

My dudes and dudettes, this is me.

I have taken on more than a touch too much like, you know, always.

I thought I could handle doing multiple blog hops in a week, but I simply can't.

I'm grinding my teeth, I can't sleep, I hardly take time to eat. I'm never "off," and I need to get "off."

That doesn't mean what it sounds like it means, but I never pass up a chance for double entendre.

Anyway, for those who care, the following is the new blog hop schedule for the foreseeable future.

I will participate in Rainbow Snippets on the first Saturday of each month. This is a group for LGBT authors and readers and/or stories with LGBT characters. They prefer snippets of around 8 sentences.

I'll hit the ground running (or, you know, plodding while supporting my broken-down bod on my walker) with the MFRW Trifecta on the second Tuesday/Wednesday each month. MFRW Steam falls on the second Tuesday and coincides with MFRW Retweet Day on the second Wednesday. These groups tend to prefer longer excerpts, so this will be my opportunity to share the first chapter of the newest Cloned Heat book.

The third Sunday of each month will be Snippet Sunday. This group tends to like excerpts of around 8-10 sentences.

The fourth Sunday of the month will be for Weekend Writing Warriors. This group also prefers snippets 8-10 sentences long.

Hopefully, this tactic will allow me to take a little better care of myself, which is something that I'm not very good at doing and never have been very good at doing. My stress levels are through the roof and nothing is very much fun, so something's gotta give.

The Lord is testing Me

So, LBRY is being retired and is switching all of its content to Odysee.

"No problem," naively says me. "I will just upload my latest bit to Odysee instead. A nice PDF like always...wait!"

Lo and behold, Odysee only accepts video formats.

Fuck my life.

I emailed support, but I have very little faith that the issue will be resolved. Written content creators were outliers on LBRY, but it worked.

So, I went and dusted off my Patreon and tweaked the tiers.

Take a look at what I've got. Just a buck will get you a new spicy Cloned Heat story every month, if that sort of thing happens to be your bag, Baby.

The more you pay, the more you get. The higher the tier, the bigger the bounty.

Anyway, that's why I'm still up at nearly 3 A.M. That and insomnia.

~Ornery Owl Has Spoken~

Free use image from Open Clipart Vectors on Pixabay

Update: The Odysee support team got back to me and the fix was an easy one. I simply have to choose "all files" when the upload box opens and it will display non-video file types. The Lord (who may well be Loki or Nyarlathotep or a Printer Devil in this case) is still testing me, however, as I will have to switch all of my existing LBRY links to Odysee links. Grrr...

Here I sit all agnostic on a Sunday morning, preparing not to go to church. We actually have a nice little church in our town, but my son, our lodger and I only go there for the food bank. I'm a bit disappointed that no-one bursts into flames when I set foot in the church, but maybe they're safe because it's only the food pantry. This weak-sauce attempt at a joke harks back to a stupid rumor that circulated about me back when I was in high school. I was a big weirdo living in a town filled with people that bought into all the Satanic Panic nonsense, so you can probably gather where this is going.

I think I might sell what little soul I have if I could find a demon who would take care of the blog hop visits for me. I end up feeling like a real shit because I never seem to be able to visit everyone. I was on track last week, and then the big storm blew in and knocked out the power, so, the best-laid plans and all that. However, the lucky winners of my visits don't only get fun and playfully snarky commentary from me. Their post is also shared by whatever social media links they make available.

In other news, I still have too many projects and nobody is surprised. I think I will feed the next word-count purist a book. I tire of people who declare that one must write x number of words a day or one isn't a "real" writer. If you're writing, you're a real writer. Everyone has their own system or is trying to find a system that works for them. I cannot abide snobs.

I not only write my books, but I am also my own editor (what, you think I can afford one of those?), my own publisher, and my own publicist. I also take care of the meal planning and cooking, and I am the dishwasher. As the only person in the household with both an operational vehicle and a driver's license, I am also Uber. My son and I do the grocery shopping together. Because we live at least 50 miles from any city, we generally hit Costco only. I am irritated that Costco doesn't sell Cool Whip. Maybe I need to order some of those whipped topping packets and blend them with the shelf-stable whipping cream that I order. I am notorious for making whipped cream that is just slightly fizzy sweetened soup.

Anyway, here is everything that you need to know about in the Naughty world of words this week.

Purchasing my work from LBRY is a very cost-effective choice. I get the full amount rather than a royalty percentage, and you pay less than you would by buying the book from Amazon. Admissibly, you can't beat the free Kindle Unlimited option. If you don't have a LBRY account, don't hesitate. LBRY is a free, open-source marketplace and is another avenue for creators to make their work available without having to worry about the rules imposed by platforms like YouTube, Patreon, or even some of the small players like Ko-Fi, where you aren't allowed to publish a link to erotica of any kind, including written works.

https://bit.ly/LBRYCard

I guess that's about it for now. I need to finish formatting my poetry book. My problem is I enjoy the creation process and want to just keep creating, but if I want the work to be seen I have to publish and promote it. This is a problem that I think that a lot of the big-name authors forget about. Of course, a small baked potato like yours truly doesn't have to worry about events such as book signings. All of my books are of the electronic variety, and I'm such a socially awkward mess that no-one would ever want me to do a book signing anyway.

I had weird dreams last night. I dreamed that my mother died but my father was still alive. My father has been gone for 10 years. My mother will be 82 years old this year. She was just given a clean bill of health by her cardiologist and pulmonologist, but when one is 82, there's always an increased chance that one of the components will just stop working. The women in my mother's family (myself included) are prone to precognitive dreams. I hope this isn't one of those times.

I then dreamed that my son and I were at a restaurant such as Denny's or Perkins and that Keanu Reeves joined us for dinner. There was a young sea lion making its way through the restaurant and it befriended my son. I needed to use the facilities, but they were having plumbing problems. When we went outside, my son and the sea lion slid down a slip-n-slide on the way to the car. I asked Keanu Reeves to call me and said I had some ideas for a project that we could work on together.

I have no idea what the second dream means, except for the bathroom part. If you dream about needing to go to the bathroom, it means you need to go to the bathroom. I'm rather sure that I'm not going to have dinner with Keanu Reeves or work on a project with him, more's the pity, and I'm quite sure that my son is not going to go for a slide down a slip-n-slide with a sea lion.

That's all for now. If nothing else, you can be happy that your dreams aren't as weird as mine.

Cloned Heat III: He Gets In Your Blood #MFRWHooks #RainbowSnippets #SnipSun #8Sunday

Genre:
M/M erotica, sci-fi

Length:
3000 words

Content Advisory:
BDSM, group sex, cliffhanger

Blurb:

Carnal Invasion II found fugitive Hangiri roughnecks Iker Macauley and Peregrine Varga en route to the monastery with the sweet and sexy pleasure clone Ohannes Herod Hertz. Ohannes wanted more of the good stuff he’d been served up the night before and Iker found himself unable to resist the lithe Lothario.

The fellows were caught with their pants down by a rogue military patrol who took them back to their base where they were introduced to the renegade scientist, General Darden Uffe Bissette, and his strangely seductive amphibious pleasure clone, Finn Storm. Ohannes quickly fell under Finn’s spell and it appeared that the siren easily held everyone but Iker and Peregrine in his sway.

Iker and Peregrine now discover that they have an ally in Colonel Zaccheus Laocoön Ionescu. But will they be able to save Ohannes from Finn’s enchantment?

Snippet

“We know that the siren is controlling everyone including Bissette,” Peregrine noted. “So, why isn’t he controlling you?”

“Finn be powerful but dare only one of him. Him can’t watch everyone alla time. Bissette be completely obsessed wit’ Finn, so his powers of observation be duller dan a rusty spoon. Corporal Viola and Sergeant Kuijpers be horny young fuckers wit’ low self-esteem. Me hoping to get dem away from Finn for a while now, but, honest, me not sure what me can offer dem. Dat little shit Finn gets in a man’s blood, literally.”

“How do you mean?” Peregrine asked.

First Look Friday: Indiscriminate Mixtures

Indiscriminate Mixtures

“Existence is filled with indiscriminate mixtures,” Yadira noted as she and her father approached West Zecor’s once-stately art museum. “Consider, for instance, the blessing-curse of our power to grant wishes. Our actions save lives but destroy worlds. We are endlessly sought after by desperate souls because of our power, and we are hated and feared for that same power. My soul is haggard, crushed by the persistent procession of seekers coaxing me with treasure that I have no use for or, worse, offering up kissable nothings that I find utterly distasteful.”

“Your temperament is similar to your mother’s,” Nyarlathotep remarked. “When I first met Nathicana, the troubles of the Cosmos weighed heavy on her gentle soul. It brought me great joy to ease her burden.”

“Mother’s temperament was softer than mine,” Yadira countered. “I have no patience for petty tyrants with inflated egos. Do you recall how that fool Qweh tried to bribe me by offering me my own empire replete with all the luxury I could dream of? I reminded him in no uncertain terms that if I desired an empire or luxury, I could have such with the blink of my eyes, a twitch of my nose, a snap of my fingers, or a wave of my hand. He was truly one of the most ignoble and ignorant individuals that we have dealt with, do you not agree?”

“True, but even he had his moments. He did, after all, commission the creation of this museum.”

“Ondina was the force behind that. The sweet princess wished to give hope to the realm’s many artistic failures, making them feel if only for a moment as if their futile efforts might count for something.”

“Everyone wishes to be immortal. Those whose works reside eternally in this museum mausoleum were granted a measure of immortality when their pieces became part of West Holpry’s celebrated art collection. People like believing in the pretends, Yadira. And, as you know, sometimes things that appear to be fabrications are actually doorways to different realities.”

“Everyone wishes to be immortal, yet those who are immortal often wish that they were not,” Yadira mused. “There may be something to be said for having a lifespan so short that one never loses innocence. It is impossible to maintain uncorrupted hope and belief once pain, loss, and injustice have become a part of life. When one has lived as long as we have, a hardness forms around a heart pierced by a dagger that can never be removed. Oh, dear, I am sure that you must despair of this conversation. Let me try things your way. Look at the algon that have escaped their globes and climbed the walls. They resemble drawings made from phosphorescent chalk.”

“I appreciate the appearance of the colonies that have formed along the walls where water drips and streams from the roof,” Nyarlathotep agreed. “There are those who would say that the algon are weeds that need to be eliminated, but this would certainly be a dull world without the beauty of the algon. This colony is a striking shade of juniper, while its neighbor has taken on a hue of opalescent iris. Has it occurred to you, my daughter, that we may have answered Zecor’s prayer to be free of the two-legged parasites that colonized it? The psychic screams of tortured phantasms grow fainter with the passage of time.”

WIP Wednesday: A Walk in the Wild West End

Image by Peter H from Pixabay

“That’s the thing about this city.”

The crone’s voice was barely audible, but her companion would have known her thoughts even if she had not spoken. From a superficial viewpoint, she was an unremarkable woman of medium height and build with a countenance that none would consider comely.

The crone had cultivated her appearance to call as little attention as possible to herself, her wild gray hair and the deep lines on her face shielding her from the nuisance of having to parry the undesired thrusts of lust from men too thick to pick up on obvious physical cues of disinterest and with egos so bloated with entitlement that even an outright declaration of disgust was met with persistence. Yadira Root had better things to do than engage in demeaning mating dances with would-be rapists.

Despite her attempts to render herself invisible, Yadira possessed a charisma that could not be ignored. The set of her jaw and the look in her eyes revealed that this crone was not someone to be trifled with. Besides, Yadira could never content herself with drab attire. Her dramatic robes were a source of enjoyment for a soul who had known great strife. She was particularly fond of the robe she now wore, which depicted swirling galaxies adrift in the endless Universe.

“What about this city?”

Yadira’s companion was a tall, striking-looking man with long black hair, a swarthy complexion, and angular features. He wore a royal blue suit that befitted his regal carriage.

The pair shared eyes the color of outer space and a powerful, platonic bond. It was apparent that anyone who messed with one would face the wrath of the other. To those unfamiliar with them, they might appear to be a mother and son, an aunt and nephew, or, perhaps, an elder sister and younger brother.

“It’s a rotting corpse and it was even while it lived, Father. This planet is corrupt to its core and its noxiousness continues to leech into the Cosmos. Would that it had been destroyed when the small star caused itself to go nova as it glutted itself on its companion’s energies. Alas, no, Zecor remains intact, bathed in the gamma rays of its dead suns.”

“Oh, Yadira,” Nyarlathotep sighed, putting his arm around his daughter’s shoulders, drawing her close, and kissing the top of her head as he had done from the time she was born. “You have known far more of misery and destruction than anyone should. I am so sorry.”

“There is no need for apologies, Father, you know that,” Yadira chided gently, linking her arm in Nyarlathotep’s. “Well, where shall we walk to in the eternal night? Shall we go to the palace, or should we head for the Ktenology center where the bodies of the foolish king, his idiot followers, and his final victims lay, preserved forever by the peculiar effects of this sepulchral world?”

Note This
This segment is part of the Tales from the Dreamlands/Yadira Chronicles series. It will feature in either Yadira's Song, The Tragic Last Days of Zetar, or both.

Nyarlathotep is the creation of H.P. Lovecraft, initially appearing in his 1920 story of the same name.

Start your story with the line, “That’s the thing about this city…”

Write a story that takes place in the same building but in two very different time periods.

Set your story in a major city that your character has a love-hate relationship with.

In the meantime, if you liked that crap, consider grabbing a copy of the first Tales from the Dreamlands book, Ketil and Yitzy's Adventure in the Xura Dream House.

Cloned Heat III: An Unexpected Ally #MFRWHooks #RainbowSnippets #SnipSun #8Sunday

Snippet

As Iker and Peregrine searched the laboratory for a way to safely tranquilize their captors, they were surprised by the appearance of Colonel Ionescu.

“Me tink maybe me find you boys here,” the jovial soldier said with a smirk, nearly causing Iker to drop the vial he was holding.

“Now look, Partner, we don’t want any trouble,” Iker advised. “It’s true that you are large and combat-trained, but there are two of us, and we ain’t no slouches when it comes to a fight.”

“Me not here to stop you,” Ionescu demurred. “But you not know what you be seekin’. Me do. Me just wantin’ me squad back. You can see Bissette be an egomaniac, but he ain’t who’s really in charge here.”
