Macario gazed in wonder at the little globe, which contained a tiny train running from a little railroad station charmingly decorated for Christmas.

“I make these myself every year,” Pika said proudly.

“It’s beautiful,” Macario said, surprised at the lump in his throat and the tears springing to his eyes. “I apologize for my sudden display of emotion. I’m very touched—pleasantly so, mind you—that such kind people can still be found in an increasingly harsh world. Thank you, Pika. I’ll take you up on your offer.”

Giving the friend he’d met less than an hour ago a brotherly embrace, Macario hurried to the little blue hybrid. He was prepared to climb into the back seat with his duffel bag, but Dom held the passenger door open for him.

“My friends ride up front,” the elf-like man said warmly.

About the Author:

C. L. Hart, the owner and sole employee of Naughty Netherworld Press, is spoken of in hushed tones. She is described as The Mad Scribe of the Northeastern Colorado Plains, The Terrible Old Woman, and The Author That Should Not Be.

When not penning sanity-destroying works of dystopian fiction, Lovecraftian fantasy, or old-school horror with the occasional sweet romance thrown in to upset the cosmic apple cart, Ms. Hart enjoys creating baked goods she hopes will be considered palatable.

Ms. Hart shares a home in a remote rural town of 134 souls with her adult son and three cats. Her sense of fashion is best described as Early Twenty-First Century Unmade Bed. This disabled former nurse can usually be found arguing with herself about subplots or rehabilitating eldritch horrors.

“I can’t thank you enough for this, Sir,” Macario said.

“Mac, I’d like to continue our conversation,” Pika invited. She reached into the pocket of her vest, bringing forth a business card and a small snow globe.

“Here’s my name and email,” she said. “Feel free to get in touch with me anytime.”

Iron and refuse thickened the stale air of the dungeon. Sometimes a door would open and the change in air pressure would carry scents of their captors into Mei Ling’s nostrils. Lemon, cinnamon, or some type of flower, usually, but barely a moment would pass and the decrepit smell would return. It’d been days. Maybe even a week, judging by the vampires’ routine. At night, they’d stir and the dungeon would come alive with the fanged parasites. They’d torture the other victims for hours before one would call out for “A drop of Steel Crest blood”.

About The Author

Edgar Mahaffey is the author of several short stories, including the First Place Winner of The Writer’s Digest Popular Fiction Awards, “Jin’s Baby”. He is also the head of the creative writing department at Shanghai High School International Division where he also teaches high school literature. In his free time, he loves to read fiction of all genres, play dungeons and dragons, and hang out with his wife, Li Pengyun, and their one-year-old daughter, Evelyn. Together, the three can be found going for walks around Shanghai, traveling, swimming (only two of the three need floaties!), and throwing random dance parties. His view of life is simple: a day spent without laughter is a day wasted.

“I’m sensing that you’re estranged from your father.”

“Are you psychic or something?” Macario asked. There was a mixture of surprise and suspicion in his voice and expression.

“Like you, I’m good at reading people. I can see the hurt on your face and hear it in your voice.”

“If you ever get tired of renting cars to harried passengers, you should consider joining the FBI,” Macario said. “You’re better at sussing people than half the agents I’ve worked with.”

“I’d love to hear more of your story, but Dom’s here,” Pika said, gesturing towards a sprightly aqua-colored hybrid vehicle pulling up to the curb. A plump little silver-haired man got out of the vehicle, smiling and waving. Macario couldn’t help but be charmed by his formal-looking chauffeur’s uniform combined with a jolly Christmas cap.

I put a description of Dom into QuickWrite's image generator and this is what they gave me. He doesn't look quite the way I described Dom in the story, but I like him.

I use it to do things like create the image in this post. I also use it to create filler scenes so I can move along in a story because it drives my obsessive ADHD brain loopy to just write "Put scene here." Then I come back and rewrite the filler scene.

“I get the feeling this case is personal.”

“It is,” Macario admitted. "This woman destroyed my family. The worst part is, I reintroduced my dad to her because I didn't recognize her at first. She was posing as an organizer at the Salvation Mission. My relationship with my father was pretty fractured at that point, and I fell for her feigned friendliness, hook, line, and sinker.
