Changes 2021

I don't do New Year's resolutions. New Year's resolutions and anything with the phrase "New You in 52" makes me want to throw stuff. January 1 is an arbitrary marker for changing things up, and I'll use it that way without any statement of resolution.

Regarding blog hops, I don't know how some of you people do it, but I become overwhelmed and feel like a failure. So I'm going to divide the "Big Four" into once a month stops rather than trying to do all of them weekly because I consistently fall flat on my face when I try to make weekly stops.

The first hop of the month will be MFRW Book Hooks. I'll publish the post and put it on the Linky list on Tuesday, as the list closes on Wednesday.

The second hop of the month will be MFRW Steam. I'll publish the post and put it on the Linky list on Monday as the hop is every second Tuesday.

The third hop of the month will be Weekend Writing Warriors. The post will be published and put on the Linky list on Saturday as the hop happens on Sunday.

The fourth hop of the month will be Snippet Sunday. This post will also be published Saturday and we'll go to the hop on Sunday.

By doing this, I should be able to consistently visit everyone on the list, comment, and share their posts on social media.

I'm continuing to work on my fantasy/sci-fi WIP, The Key of Eidolon, and hope to have it ready for publication by my birthday, February 15. I'm not one of those "never ask a lady her age" people. Fuck that noise. I'll be 56. Ageism is bullshit and needs to die.

After reading The Erotica Handbook by Emily Baker I've been inspired to try writing and publishing erotica shorts (around 3000 words each) again. If you've ever been interested in trying your hand at erotica, this book is a pretty good guide. If you buy it through the following link, I'll make a small commission.

I vehemently disagree with the author on the assertion that you need to write 2500 words a day or else. If you can do it and want to do it, more power to you. For me, that sort of daily word count goal is impractical and leads to burnout and shitty writing. It would be like NaNoWriMo every day which to me sounds like hell. No thank you.

I write an approximately 3000-word segment for whatever WIP I'm working on every week and will now be writing an approximately 3000-word erotic short every week, plus I want to keep working on my poetry and other crafts. That is quite an ambitious enough undertaking for me.

A lot of people swear by newsletters, but I've never been able to pull the trigger on doing one consistently. I guess they can be effective, but I know that I have a bunch of newsletter subscriptions, and I never open them. I'm playing with the idea of doing a monthly zine featuring all the work I've done over the previous month, which can either be bought as a one-shot on LBRY or will be part of the $5 and up subscription tiers on BitPatron, Ko-Fi, and Patreon.

I'd love to see some income for my efforts in the coming year.

It's now 5:30 A.M. and I still haven't slept. Even if I have no other friends, insomnia will always be with me.

Sneak Peek Sunday: Ready to Fight

Free use image by Enrique Meseguer on Pixabay

“You have some gall speaking to me this way!” Rilpu barked. “I should have walked away at the start, but I’m in the thick of it now. I’ll be of no use to Nyarlathotep, King Rokon, or myself if I make myself sick with curiosity. When I step behind this curtain, I am surely more likely to find a leering troglodyte than an angel of the morning. Be forewarned, I’m ready to fight. I am irritated at having my breakfast delayed, so when I get you in my sights, boom boom, out go the lights!”

End of a Life #WeWriWa #8Sunday #SnipSun #SnippetSunday

The Blurb
The fate of the Cosmos rests in the hands of an unlikely team of unusual friends. Will an exiled member of an ancient extraterrestrial race, a human ghost, and two ghouls be able to outfox an ancient evil and beat Nyarlathotep at his game before time runs out? This buddy story is the first in a series of New Cthulhu Mythos cliffhangers.

The Notes
Last time, Ketil recalled committing his soul to Mormo.

The Snippet

Ketil fell back from the platform, the spike rupturing his heart as it passed through his spine. His skull shattered as it hit the concrete floor. As his long hair flew back from his head during his descent, it was revealed that he had carved the unhallowed symbols into his forehead as well as his torso.

“That room ran red with blood,” Ketil stated quietly as his companions watched him, unsure what to say. “It matters not to me. It was many years in the past. But that my family should have seen that image—that my mum and my sister should have to see…”

“Best not to think on such things too long, Guv,” Robin suggested, touching Ketil’s arm with surprising gentleness. “Ain’t a thing you can do to change the past. Stiff upper lip, y’know, and soldier on.”

Thirsty Thursday Xmahanukwanzyule Edition: A Trick of Fate

Rilpu contemplates her situation
Free use image by Robert Waghorn on Pixabay

A Trick of Fate

“Curses—the wizard has absconded through a gate,” Nyarlathotep expounded, gripping Rilpu’s hand and pulling her away from the crowded market. “We’ll not have much luck summoning Han in this arid place. Let us make for colder climes. I know an evergreen realm sure to bring a shiver to the bones. T’ is a place of frost and mittens where we can sit by a crackling fireplace and sip hot cocoa from festive mugs while planning our next move.”

Rilpu loved being in Nyarlathotep’s presence, but her practical side admonished her that she had nothing to gain by remaining with the notorious Cosmic Trickster. However, Nyarlathotep had given her far more than shimmering baubles and small gifts nestled in glitter-sprinkled wrapping paper. He could have used her secret desire for love against her, but he had behaved nobly, treating her as a sister. Rilpu believed that she could trust him.

Nyarlathotep is the creation of H.P. Lovecraft, initially appearing in his 1920 story of the same name.

Stripped to Please: Solid Advice from Jim #MFRWHooks

The Blurb

When spoiled rich college boy Maxwell Bancroft decides to stop in at the XXX Show Club, he meets two sexy strippers who are literally out of this world.

The Snippet

Max receives further unwanted advice from Jim Scott, his college advisor.

“What I’m seeing here before me is not a stupid young man,” Scott declared in a fashion that Max imagined was supposed to be encouraging. “What I see before me is a young man who, up until now, has had no particular reason to be motivated. May I suggest that whether or not you intend to marry the young lady who is the mother of your child, you are going to want to make that child proud that you are his or her father. I know that being a father at such a young age must be daunting. It may even seem impossible. But I believe in you, Max. I believe you have it in you to be an excellent father and a good student. Remember, I’m here for you, Man.”

Max forced a smile, shook Jim Scott’s hand, and, after leaving the counseling center, went to the Triple X Strip Club on the seedy side of town. The dancers at Triple X would put out if the pay was right, and Max felt that a quickie with a nasty girl was just what he needed to forget about his pregnant stepsister. He didn’t dislike Wella, but he’d never had any intention of spending the rest of his life shackled to her. He supposed that he had no-one but himself to blame for thinking with his dick.

“At least the strippers at Triple X are probably on the pill,” Max reassured himself.

The Key of Eidolon: In the Garden

Image copyright Sandra Crook

In the Garden

The five extreme metal musicians along with Little John Tamboli the ghoul and their former bandmate, the spectral Ketil Nagel, made their way to a vast garden near a lake. The sunset caused a vivid Hollywood-pink light to reflect from the lake. The nearly full moon began to rise, a remarkable paraselene in its halo. Creepy dwarven scarecrows made from old boards and rags seemed to turn their attention to the strange group.

“The less said in the presence of these sentries, the better,” Ketil suggested. “The moon is rising and so are they, which is not a good thing.”

Ketil set up a sharpened stave in the center of the pentagram. The stave was weighted at the bottom with a small block that was trussed to five spikes hammered into the stone at the star’s five points. The deranged supplicant then muttered an unearthly chant, bequeathing his blood to Mormo and her minions. He stepped up onto a platform and turned away from his ghoulish masterpiece in a wide stance; spreading his arms, he gave a final shout.

Iä! Iä! Mormo walachi beorth! Mi Mormo fhtagn! Inferna plaga vranech morpheo Mormo fhtagn! Iä! Iä, Nyarlathotep!”

Thirsty Thursday: The Empty Dreams of a Lost Delta Dawn

The Empty Dreams of a Lost Delta Dawn

The date was November 4, 2014. Pepper Baiij was no longer an insecure, impetuous twenty-year-old cheating on the husband who doted on her but whom she didn’t really love. Pepper’s life had not turned out the way she’d hoped back in 1987 when she was fooling around with Virgil DeMille behind Larry’s back. She was now forty-seven years old, many years divorced and living in a dilapidated mobile home with no working furnace.

There were things that Pepper was grateful for. She had a job that she found acceptable, and she had twenty-five-year-old twins to whom she was deeply devoted, as well as five cats that she adored. Her daughter Ixchel was savvy and self-reliant, but she worried about her son, Quetzalcoatl, who struggled with anxiety and depression.

“I always believed I’d do wonderful things,” Pepper remarked as Gerry and Paul Clifford’s guitars wailed the lonely riffs of Mainline’s 1981 song, “Manual Overdrive.” “But my big dreams of bright lights and big city nights died one by one, leaving me in this dim place. I wish I knew you when I was young, Gerry, or maybe it’s better that I didn’t. I probably would have gone and fucked things up like I always do. These days I prefer rustic simplicity to nihilistic glamour. I didn’t find fame and fortune, but I didn’t wind up dead either. I worked something out, and maybe that’s the best that can be expected. But oh, Gerry, I wish that somehow I could help you.”

Stripped to Please: Sound Advice #MFRWHooks

The Blurb

When spoiled rich college boy Maxwell Bancroft decides to stop in at the XXX Show Club, he meets two sexy strippers who are literally out of this world.

The Snippet

In the last installment, readers met Max, a privileged playboy who put his straight-laced stepsister in a family way.

The money that Max had saved for a year to go to Europe and party like a rock star was now being used to pay his tuition at Pleasant State College, or, as Max called it, Pissant State College. Dad insisted that Max get his degree sooner rather than later now that he was going to be a father.

Wella wouldn’t hear of an abortion, her mother backed her up, and Dad backed up his new wife. Mom was busy banging some Aristotle Onassis wannabe on some Greek island and backed Dad up because she didn’t want to be bothered with Max’s admissibly self-created problems. Max attempted to enlist the help of his student adviser, but Jim Scott, a plebe if there ever was one, could barely conceal his mirth at what he evidently considered to be “poor little rich boy” problems.

Scott, a freckle-faced English major with an excessive quantity of wavy blond hair, eyes that looked like they might be limpid pools, whatever limpid pools were, and an aw-shucks grin, advised Max to join the Young Business Leaders group, as Max indicated that he would probably end up working for his father’s company in some capacity.

“It’s never too early to start networking,” Scott stated, going on to suggest that Max might want to join a fraternity. He then suggested that Maxwell’s scores on his ACT and SAT, combined with his barely passing high school grades indicated that Max should take remedial classes over the summer to build his scholastic skills and make a fresh start at school in the fall.

My offer is still open for a promo post at Readers Roost (http://orneryblogemporium.blogspot.com) in exchange for an honest review on Amazon for Coming to Earth. Email your media kit and/or Blogger-friendly HTML to chartley65@gmail.com with PROMO POST in the subject line and I'll email you a PDF of Coming to Earth. I'm aware that this story is not high-class literature, but I think it's worth three stars. It's currently at two.

If you take me up on my offer, it wouldn't hurt to leave me a comment telling me to check my email. I get a lot of crap in my inbox and wouldn't want to miss anything.

And now it's time for...
